Overview
Menandros, commonly known by the Latin name Menander, really existed. The Greek kingdom of Bactria which Menander ruled occupied portions of present-day Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Physical evidence of the historian of Menandros includes the conis minted during his reign, some of which have the Buddhist Dharmachakra (wheel of law) in their design. The Story narrated here is adapted from the Milianda Panha, one of the major works of Buddhist literature. Whether Nagasena was a historical personage is unknown. It is remarkable to think that in the second century B.C. the momentous dialogue between the greatest Greek monarch and a deeply wise Buddhist monk may actually have occurred. Now read on...
